Since retiring from the State Department in 2007, I have written two novels (the first under the pseudonym David Carmell):

Appointments, A Novel of Politics in our Nation's Capital, by David Carmell (2013)

Ambition, manipulation, love, and divided loyalties.
Seizing his opportunity in 2014, Alabama Senator Augustus Williams relentlessly pursues his dream of becoming the South’s first white Supreme Court Justice in decades, using every device at his disposal.
His decade-long quest reverberates across the tangled web of Washington and national politics, with devastating consequences. It irreversibly alters his own life, the lives of lovers, friends, and strangers, and the course of history.

The Plot to Cool the Planet, a Novel by Sam Bleicher, forthcoming Fall 2018

Emerging climate disasters, notorious murder, diplomats’ rogue scheme.

June 2020.  An outspoken climate scientist is murdered. All signs point to a professional assassination to end her forceful advocacy of controversial geoengineering concepts that would slow global warming.

Scientific data shows more rapidly rising sea levels, making coastal cities uninhabitable. Millions of subsistence farmers and fishermen face disaster as climate change destroys their livelihoods. No nation is offering to take in climate refugees.

Frustrated by international inaction, a handful of diplomats secretly launch a plot to cool the planet using controversial geoengineering methods. The odds of success are low and the danger to their careers, and perhaps their lives, is high. The discovery of their project generates dangerous Great Power confrontation and global debate over climate intervention.

The Plot to Cool the Planet will be published in the fall of 2018 by Newman Springs Publishers and available through bookstores and Amazon in paperback and digital formats.
